In the mechanical pressing process. Heat can destroy the nutrients in the oil, and although the main benefit of aromatherapy comes from essential oils, there is no reason not to use a carrier oil. Especially in massage apply the oil directly to the skin. Some carriers are rich in vitamin E, others have beta-carotene which can be absorbed into the skin along with essential oils.

While those containing vitamin E have a relatively long shelf life, other carrier oils contain more omega-3 fats, which while good for the skin, tend to make the oil more susceptible to rancidity. As a result, natural blended oils are usually purchased in smaller quantities to ensure they are depleted and undamaged.

Blended natural oils also tend to lose their potency quickly, but in this case because of their volatility, and instead of going rancid, they lose their strength through oxidation.

There are over 500 different essential oils. Each of them has its own characteristics and when combined with each other and with different base oils, the number of possible combinations is enormous.
